COCHAV HASHACHAR

This religious community village was established in 1980 near the remains of Jewish settlement from the first Beit HaMikdash era. Surrounded by fertile agricultural land, wells and burial caves, the community has attracted 230 families to date

There are plans to create an experiential tourist center focusing on flowers and spices of Eretz Yisrael, habitation on the edge of the desert and environmental protection

The comfortable climate, similar to Jerusalem, with cool evenings and low humidity all year round makes Cochav Hashachar a popular community for many Torah observant families. Although most residents are native-born Israelis, there are also approximately twenty families from France and English-speaking countries. They are employed in a wide variety of fields including medicine, law, education, sofrei stam and agriculture

In addition to day care facilities until 4 in the afternoon, kindergartens and a fine elementary school for children from the first grade through the sixth grade, there is also a special yeshiva high school for boys, Ahavat Hayim, for boys with learning difficulties

From the sixth through eighth grades, boys travel to Beit El and girls to Ofra

Mainstream boys go to high school in Beit El, Ma’aleh Adumim or Jerusalem and girls to the Ulpana in Ofra or Ma’aleh Levona

Extracurricular activities include chess, dance, animal husbandry, drama, science and art for children, Rosh Chodesh evenings and a morning learning framework for women and Torah learning on Shabbat and during the week for the entire adult community

The youth movement, Ezra, meets regularly

The community library is open four times a week and the gym is open according to planned activities. A swimming pool is located in nearby Rimonim

There is a sephardi synagogue and an ashkenazi synagogue as well as a Beit Midrash and Kollel where 20 young men and 30 married men learn all day and other join them and the three Kollel Rabbis in the evening. A mikve rounds out the religious facilities

There is a medical clinic, dental clinic, grocery store and events hall within the community

Directions:Cochav HaShachar is located on the Alon Highway on the way to the Jordan Valley between the communities of Rimonim and Ma’aleh Ephraim. The communities of Mizpe Kramim, Ma’aleh Shlomo, and Michmas are also nearby

From Jerusalem go north past Pisgat Zev and travel the Ramallah bypass road until the right turn to the Alon Highway at the sign to Michmas

From Tel Aviv travel to the Tapuach intersection and turn right toward Jerusalem. Several kilometers after passing Ofra you will reach the left turn to the Alon Highway, again seeing the sign for Michmas

Travel time from Jerusalem is approximately 40 minutes, from Tel Aviv an hour and a quarter

There is public transportation from Jerusalem to Cochav HaShachar 4 times daily and in the opposite direction 6 times a day. Many people share rides with others from the community
